An INR blood test measures how quickly your blood clots, and it's one of the most common tests carried out in UK general practice, mostly because so many people take warfarin, an anticoagulant that slows down clotting to help prevent strokes and clots.

What Is a Normal INR Range?

If you're not taking an anticoagulant, your normal INR reference range sits roughly between 0.8 and 1.2, reflecting how quickly your blood clots without any medicine slowing it down. Once you start warfarin, the aim is to purposely move away from that range to a point where clotting takes two to three times longer than usual.

For most people on warfarin, that means a standard target of 2.0 to 3.0, a range built to let your team adjust your dose without constant fine-tuning.

Some conditions call for a higher target. A mechanical heart valve, for example, often needs a target closer to 2.5 to 3.5, sometimes higher depending on the valve's type and position, since the valve material gives clots more opportunity to form. Why Do People Need Regular INR Monitoring?

Most people end up testing their INR for one of three reasons: atrial fibrillation, a clot such as a DVT or a pulmonary embolism, or a mechanical heart valve. Each carries its own clotting risk, and warfarin plays a slightly different role depending on which one applies to you.

  • Atrial fibrillation is an irregular heartbeat that lets blood pool inside the heart instead of moving through it smoothly, raising the chance that a clot forms and travels to the brain, causing a stroke.

What Is Warfarin and How Does It Work?

Warfarin is an anticoagulant medicine, sometimes called a blood thinner, though it doesn't actually thin your blood. It works by reducing how much vitamin K your liver uses to build clotting factors, so clots take longer to form. Because the effect depends on vitamin K, several ordinary things can shift your INR between tests, which is why it’s important to keep monitoring even once your dose feels settled.

Many anticoagulation clinics now support patients who choose this route, and the same guidance expects the equipment to be checked regularly against a clinic meter to confirm it stays accurate.

How Self-Testing Works

Once you're set up, the process itself is short:

  1. Prick your finger with the lancing device provided and place a drop of blood on a test strip.
  2. The meter reads your INR within about a minute and displays the result.
  3. You either contact your anticoagulation team with the reading, or adjust your own dose if you've agreed a self-management plan with them.

In the United States, this same test is often sold as a protime test or protime check, since PT and INR are reported together on the one reading. Whatever it's called, home testing doesn't remove your clinic from the picture entirely. It just changes how often you need to visit them.
